New guidance issued on skyscrapers
English Heritage and the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (Cabe) have joined forces to issue an updated set of guidelines for the construction of tall buildings.
Backed by the government departments for Community and Local Government and Culture, Media and Sport, the plans include a list of requirements which include less 'ad hoc' planning, sustainable design and the integration of tall buildings into the wider plans for the vicinity.
Cabe chief executive Richard Simmonds said that because of the impact tall buildings had on their surroundings 'It is essential that they are planned well, designed well and meet the highest standards in terms of sustainability'.
The new guidance has been issued at a time when the redevelopment of provincial cities and continued development in London is involving the construction of a large number of tall buildings.
Among skyscrapers soon to start construction or already being built, the London Bridge Tower, the Eastgate Tower in Manchester, the Lumiere Tower in Leeds and the Beetham Tower West in Liverpool will all be the tallest buildings in their respective cities when complete, according to Skyscraper news.
