Virtual construction sites developed
Students in Inverness training for the construction industry are to get the opportunity to work on a building site from their classroom.
Inverness College UHI is carrying out a major new e-learning project that will see the youngsters walking round virtual construction sites, so that they can develop their skills with an experience as similar to actually being on site as is possible.
Developed thanks to a £900,000 grant from the Scottish Further Education Funding Council, the programme is designed to give students greater flexibility, and is especially aimed at those students in rural areas and those taking on apprenticeships with rural employers.
Angus Macleod, head of the school of construction at Inverness College, explained: "The virtual building site is designed so an online student can walk round it, check its progress and assess issues such as health and safety."
He added: "There are a whole range of such pioneering packages being developed making life easier for students in an industry where there are big wages and opportunities for those who gain qualifications."
Mr Macleod also stated that the programme will be up and running in time for the new academic year in September.
