UK DIY practitioners 'need to be alert to asbestos risks'
Before they pick up their power tools and start doing some DIY work on their properties, householders might want to think about the dangers of asbestos, an expert has suggested.According to the British Lung Foundation's chief executive Dame Helena Shovelton, people should try to check for signs of asbestos prior to any home improvement work they are planning.
She stated: 'Don't just pick up the hammer and start doing dangerous things in the house when you don't know and you haven't checked.
'Be asbestos aware. Know about it, think about it.'
The threats posed by asbestos have taken quite a long time to filter through to the public, the expert went on to suggest, due to the fact it was used a lot in the buildings of the past.
Figures published by her organisation have shown that 65 per cent of consumers might struggle to identify domestic asbestos.
