Protective workwear required as chimney comes down
Protective workwear was required on site in Sheffield yesterday (January 22nd) as demolition workers brought down a 45-metre high chimney stack.It was one of the last buildings to be cleared from a 50-acre site of a former stainless steel plant owned by Finnish company Outokumpu.
The work was handled by Hughes & Salvidge and the Professional Demolition Consultancy (PDC) Ltd.
Operations director at Hughes & Salvidge, Greg Lannon, said that the blast was a success.
He told The Construction Index: "This was a smooth operation and another example of the successful partnership between Hughes & Salvidge and PDC."
Police operated traffic enforcement on the nearby M1 motorway to ensure that no members of the public got caught up in the demolition.
With demolition work, where there are explosives on site and a potential for flying debris, the employer must provide its workforce with personal protective equipment, such as safety helmets.
