Green home improvers 'should be supported with VAT cut'
People looking to make improvements to their properties should be given the incentive of a lower VAT rate to encourage them to go green, according to one expert. In a development which might appeal to those considering undertaking environmentally-focused construction projects, the Federation of Master Builders' director of external affairs Brian Berry feels that a five per cent VAT rate could prove attractive.
He commented: 'A simpler way of encouraging householders to make their homes greener and more energy efficient would be to cut the rate of VAT to five per cent for home improvements.'
Meanwhile, Mr Berry has also noted the positive implications that the government's new Warm Homes, Greener Homes Strategy might have for the country's construction sector.
'New market opportunities' could be created for building firms as a result of ministers' proposals, he suggests.
Insulation is one key area that the government is aiming to focus on in its new strategy.
