Fuel cell boilers in the home
A joint venture between energy group Centrica and Ceres Power has been announced to develop a fuel-cell-powered mini boiler for use in the home.
The flameless boiler, which will be marketed by British Gas, will help cut the energy bill of the average household more than a third.
It will be able to generate electricity and also cut down on pollution while only costing around £2,500.
The fuel cell technology will be used by harnessing natural gas, instead of hydrogen in a model around the same size as current boilers.
Although plans are currently underway, the design phase is expected to take around 12 months, with an estimated market release date within three years.
Chairman of Ceres Power Philip Holbeche, told the Independent: "It will save consumers money. It will also save the country a considerable amount of energy."
The new system will also utilise any excess steam by recycling it to create more electricity.
