Fall arrest equipment part of safe working practice

Fall arrest equipment part of safe working practice The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has issued its latest reminder to companies to ensure work at height is carried out safely after a man was seriously injured in a fall.

The 21-year-old worker was cleaning a gutter when he fell three metres through a glasshouse roof onto the concrete floor below, sustaining injuries that kept him off work for three months.

The HSE says that employers must do more to ensure such work can be carried out safely.

HSE inspector Chris Gregory said: "Companies must make sure they understand the risks involved in working at height and take suitable measures to prevent workers from falling."

Fall arrest equipment, which ranges from harnesses to rescue kits, is one such safety measure that can significantly reduce the chance of fatalities.

HSE guidelines say that "all employers have a duty to… put in place sensible health and safety measures to manage risks".
