£200m available to build "sustainable communities"

£200m available to build "sustainable communities"

John Prescott has earmarked £200 million for innovative development projects across the south-east, in order to build new housing across three new growth areas.

Projects include providing more homes in housing shortage areas, enhancing local woodland and recreation areas, new transport infrastructure schemes, town centre revitalisation projects and improved leisure centres.

The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) will choose how to divide the £200 million budget, after receiving nearly 400 expressions of interest and over 70 fully worked-up bids.

Advice for potential developers will be available from the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE), who will help maintain the high design standard of submissions.

Around £25 million of the budget has been set aside for environmental projects, and the ODPM has revealed a "particularly encouraging" response for developers wishing to enhance quality green spaces.

Housing and planning minister Yvette Cooper, who announced the proposals today, said: "We need to build more homes so that the next generation of first time buyers can afford a place of their own.

"But they need to be homes in sustainable communities not just dormitories."
